He then seeks sanctuary in the peaceful domain of Castrovalva, only to discover that it is an illusory, dimensionally paradoxical trap set for him by the Master with the unwilling aid of a kidnapped Adric. The Doctor eventually wins the day by enlisting the help of the Castrovalvan people who, although also part of the Master's creation, are /10(). The 'collapse' of Castrovalva is great & it is a shame 80s technology isn't quite up to the story's ambition, although I'd be interested to see how they'd do it now even with CGI. Janet Fielding & Sarah Sutton get to move a lot of the story along & are the better for it, although it seems obvious to me that this TARDIS is too crowded.

From the point of view of his character, it's a horrible start. It's not helped, either, by his having to do impressions of the other Doctors, which just make us cringe with embarrassment. Check out this great listen on Peter Davison reads the first gripping adventure for the Fifth Doctor.

The linking themes are apparently the Doctor’s regeneration and the Master’s return. However, those aren’t necessarily the strongest foundations for a trilogy, since that Fifth Doctor is very clearly a reaction against.

Castrovalva is a bit of an oddity in the Doctor Who canon. Although rich in the series' mythology and fairly good at introducing the main characters and vehicle for the series, it is also notable for a far slower pace in the first three episodes than most other Doctor Who stories, and certainly doesn't seem to fit the action/adventure mold more popular during earlier years.
“Castrovalva” launched Doctor Who’s nineteenth season, and was the first full story for the Doctor’s fifth incarnation, Peter Davison.
